Corozal Hotels Directory

corozal-bay-view-from-cerros-maya-site-with-map

View of Corozal Town Bay from the Cerros Maya site.

Corozal is the preferred abode of expats and retirees due to its easy-going pace of life and immediate proximity to the Mexican city of Chetumal that by itself has more inhabitants than the entire country of Belize. Tourists tend to pass through this Latino community on their way to other areas of Belize. But for those seeking a quiet retreat with access to the ocean, Maya Ruins, and an eco-friendly destination, Corozal may be your choice. The town itself has a few hotels with the better and more upscale establishments on the waterfront such as Consejo, Copper Bank and Sarteneja. Access to Corozal is by the Nothern Highway that connects with Mexico and the interior of Belize, and by daily commuter flights. A water taxi service that connects Corozal with Chetumal and San Pedro Ambergris Caye and Caulker is also available.

Every day hundreds of people and tens of thousands of dollars in goods cross the two-lane bridge spanning the Rio Hondo River, which forms the Belize-Mexico border.

Corozal Town built up as a border town with trade on the Mexican side and has a major archaeological site at Santa Rita on the town’s western end. Another major Maya attraction is Cerros right across the Corozal bay, which once linked cities on the Yucatan Peninsula with those in present day Belize.
