Belmopan 15 July 1996 - The government of Belize has this month signed the commencement date for the Computer Wagering Act to allow the establishment of online wagering. The Computer Wagering Act 1995 provides for the establishment of a properly regulated online gaming industry via the INTERNET.

Under the new law a Belize Computer Wagering Licensing Board appointed by government supervises the new industry and protects the interests of individuals who utilise gaming servers located in Belize. Investors are required to post bonds and acquire licenses in order to conduct this type of business.

Belize is the first country to expressly provide legislation for the proper conduct and regulation of gambling via the INTERNET. Research conducted by firms in the US indicates that this new industry can be a gold mine for serious investors given the worldwide access to the INTERNET as a confidential and convenient means of gambling, especially from areas where gaming is not possible.
