One of the best strategies to save money on calls is to buy pre-paid phone cards which are available at almost any supermarket, gas station or convenience store. Many Belizeans are poor and cannot aford a fixed telephone - so even the smallest Chinese shops that you will find on practically any corner stock phone cards. You can use the phone cards at any public telephone, borrowed telephone or a rented cell phone. If you have GSM 1900 MHZ cellular phone (now common in Europe and becoming increasingly popular in the U.S.A. and Canada), you can bring it to Belize and buy a SIM card for US$15.00 Equipped with a pre-paid phone card - you can have your own phone in Belize and you can even call in off-peak hours to save even more money. It is also very convenient for family members to reach you instantly from aboad rather than through a hotel switchboard which can often be busy or not able to reach you if you are in the pool or outside the establishment. Unless you are a high-powered executive and need to use your U.S. telephone number with your GSM cell phone in Belize, avoid the "cell phone roaming" services offered locally. The prices are almost double what you will pay compared to using pre-paid phone cards. It's just cheaper to stick a local SIM card in your phone and call home. There are currently two telephone companies in Belize, Belize Telecommunications Ltd. and Intelco. BTL is a large, well established company (the former monopoly) with nation-wide coverage. Their cellular service is called Digicell and you need to make sure that you buy Digicell pre-paid cards to work with their system. The Intelco company is new start up and its coverage at this time is mainly in Belize City. Its plan is called CellXpress and any Intelco pre-paid phone card (not as ubiquitous as the BTL cards) will work. PrePaid Cards PrePaid cards allow you to make: Local, Long Distance, International, Paging and Cellular calls. This service is accessible from any Regular touchtone phone, Fixed and Mobile Cellular phones, and Payphones. These cards are found at BTL offices and distributors countrywide.
