Your Belize Trip: What To Pack and Bring
Like most tropical countries, Belize shouts casual - in fact the mantra at most tourism resorts is No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem - and yes you can find tee shirts with this motto all over the place. Guayaberas, Tee shirts, shorts, loose-fitting slacks and shirts are fine and you will look like a native. Formal occasions for men require at least a long-sleeve guayabera or long-sleeved dress shirt and long pants. For women a simple cocktail dress or formal gown depending on the occasion is fine. You can leave your fancy clothes and jewelry at home. In Belize City you can rent top-notch threads ranging from Tuxedos for men and and name-brand formal dress and accessories for ladies - and this includes shoes. You might want to bring your prescription medications and a copy of your eyeglass prescription, if you wish but you can find most any U.S. F.D.A. approved medications at most Belize pharmacies. Air Travel To Belize
At present, five international airlines fly to Belize: American, Continental, Delta, US Air and TACA. US Air has daily flights from Charlotte. Continental has two non-stop flights a day from Houston and a weekly flight from Newark. American has one daily non-stop from Dallas Fort-Worth and one from Miami. Delta has daily flights from Atlanta and a weekly flight from Los Angeles. TACA at present has a non-stop from Houston. Its Miami flights to Belize City require a change of planes in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, and its other flights stop in San Salvador, where TACA hubs.
The airlines use mostly Boeing 737 or other similar equipment to Belize, with the usual tight seating in coach. Flights from Miami, Dallas, Charlotte and Houston take about two hours to two and a half hours. At present there is no scheduled non-stop or direct service from Canada or Europe. In-season, there is one weekly charter from Toronto and one from Cuba.
With the construction of a new international airport at Placencia service is expected to begin from Europe, perhaps in late 2013. One of the chief complaints from travelers is the high cost of airfare. Tickets from the U.S. to Cancun or Cozumel often are one-half the cost of tickets to Belize City. For those looking to save money on air travel to Belize, you can use Cancun as your Belize airline hub. Then catch the ADO first class air conditioned bus direct to Belize. This service runs every day as of September 2011.
Travelers can buy tickets for and get information about bus services at the ADO office at Avenida Belice; 6am-10pm, just west of the Museo de la Cultura Maya in Chetumal City. New schedule time for the route for Belize to Cancun: 7:30pm Pick Up times at Corozal and Orange Walk: Belize City (7:30 pm) – Orange Walk (9:00 pm) – Corozal (10:00pm).
Tulum (4:00am)– Playa del Carmen (5:00am)- Cancun Airport (6:30am) – Cancun Bus Terminal (7:00 am).
The Hospital Route (Merida): Belize City (7:00pm) – Orange Walk (8:30pm) – Corozal (9:30pm) – Merida (6:00am) This schedule took effect Sunday, September 25th, and routes still run Monday to Sunday.
Belizeans and travelers have said they have a hard time contacting ADO by email or on the web. We can confirm this having tried several times and invariably are directed to check their website. But after some research we have obtained and posted the ADO Belize Mexico Bus Schedule at our Blog for your convenience. You can contact ADO in Mexico 01 98 38 325 110 Ext 2403
From the chief gateways of Houston, Charlotte, Miami and DFW to Belize City, you can expect to pay US$350 to $800 round-trip. Several airlines flying here, notably US Air, occasionally have Internet specials with prices as low as US$300, but you have to act fast as the windows for purchase and travel are narrow. Our advice: Sign up for Internet fare notices on the airlines that fly to Belize.
