A native of Nicaragua, Walter Castillo moved to Belize as a young aspiring artist and settled in the Stann Creek District in Southern Belize. A self-taught artist, Castillo also learned to appreciate the rich cultural heritage of the Garifuna, Creole and Mayan people of Belize. Castillo's gloriously colorful paintings are full of movement and joy. Castillo's paintings have been exhibited in England, the United States, Mexico, Nicaragua and Honduras; they adorn the walls of many of Belize's nicest hotels. Walter Castillo and his wife, Lindsey, are the proprietors of Belizean Arts, a unique art gallery located in Fido's Courtyard, a small plaza overlooking the sea in the center of San Pedro Town. The gallery features a wide variety of arts and crafts available for sale, many created by Walter and Lindsey, who is also a talented artist as well as the gallery's manager. Visitors can purchase unusual paper mache sculptures, handmade jewelry, handicrafts made from colorful Guatemalan fabrics, and original paintings by Walter Castillo and other talented Belizean artists, as well as handpainted, washable T-shirts featuring colorful beach and street scenes, animals, fish and birds. Handpainted wooden chairs and brightly colored fish made from coconut leaves are new and popular additions to the gallery.
