Next to the legendary Emory King the most famous expat in Belize, Raymond Auxillou, also known as Captain Ray is the best known North American expat living in Belize. While Emory was shipwrecked in Belize and decided to stay, an ill wind allegedly blew Ray Auxillou into Belize in the 1960s. The British-Canadian lad eventually settled on Caye Caulker where he led the fabled life of beachcomber, ladies man, fisherman, tourism pioneer, educator, magician, investor, hotel owner, marine biologist and give-them-hell activist.

Captain Ray married a Belize Maya woman, settled down and became a family man – for a while. As is wont with free spirits the gentleman’s wondering eyes eventually sent him into exile to Florida where he did a fresh start. He married a young lady librarian from Colombia, and eventually ended up right back where he started – in Belize. But this time in a remote and hilly area of Western Belize, the Hillview area to be exact. Hillview is a failed government housing project for the poor that is now becoming a suburb for those seeking a secluded and picturesque area to retire.

International Living Says Belize Good For Diving

The folks at International Living are never short on ways to pump a destination such as Belize to promote their wares of newsletters and urgent appeals to purchase real estate. At Belize we generally file these under the “Fluff” directory along with the weekly Belize Tourism Board “alerts”.

But this week’s foray from International Living is interesting:

Belize whale watching vacation

Diving with whale sharks in Belize – picture courtesy Ray Auxillou

The graceful beauty of stingrays, multi-colored tropical fish, swaying sea grass, dawdling giant sea turtles…and yes, even the sand-papery skin of nurse sharks are all part of the dive experience of Belize.

I’m a novice, or what is commonly known as a “resort diver.” No certification, but after taking a short 45-minute course I’m good to go. For me, this is the best-case scenario. My PADI dive master takes care of all the technical and safety aspects so I’m carefree to explore ocean life at depths of 20 to 40 feet—which is where most of the tropic fish hang out.
